'Wannabe Cop Killers' Arrested after Shooting at Texas Deputies

Sept. 9, 2021
No Bexar County Sheriff's Office deputies were injured after two suspects opened fire them while they were responding to the report of a burglary in San Antonio.

Two men accused of shooting at Bexar County Sheriff's Office deputies responding to reports of a burglary in a far West Side neighborhood have been arrested.

Sheriff Javier Salazar, with his voice cracking with emotion, said "by the grace of God" his deputies were not killed or injured and called the suspects "wannabe cop killers."

Salazar said the suspects, both believed to be in their late teens or early 20s, have refused to provide their names to authorities. They are both facing attempted murder charges and one count of burglary in connection with the incident that ended with a physical altercation between a homeowner and one of the suspects.

According to Salazar, one of the individuals fired seven rounds at the first deputy who arrived in the area of Baffin Peak near Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland.

Two of the rounds narrowly missed the deputy, hitting the patrol car's door frame and window, Salazar said. The deputy, who has worked patrol for the last year, was not able to return fire before the shooter ran to join the second suspect.

Both were found hiding behind a vehicle in the 9800 block Twinbear Creek around the corner from the shooting by a second deputy.

Salazar said the second suspect then began shooting a the deputy. He said both individuals were using a semi-automatic pistol.

After the second shooting, both men led the deputies on a foot pursuit, jumping over fences and attempting to break into several homes in the neighborhood, Salazar said.

They were finally able to enter a residence but were confronted by the homeowner, who fought with one of the suspects until deputies arrived.

"That homeowner made sure that suspect won't ever forget trying to break into his house," said Salazar, describing a bloodied and beaten suspect. "Kudos to him for doing what he had to do."

Both deputies have been placed on administrative leave per protocol, the sheriff said.
