N.J. Police Nab Suspect in Crawl Space after 7-Hour Standoff

March 4, 2025
An hourslong standoff ensued when Franklin Township police tried to serve an arrest warrant, and the suspect was taken into custody when he was found in a crawl space.

Cops arrested a man who held them at bay for seven hours after finding him hiding in the crawl space of a home, police said.

Franklin Township Police arrived at a residence on Woodlawn Avenue in Newfield around 12:30 p.m. Monday to serve an arrest warrant from neighboring Monroe Township.

A man at the residence was wanted on a domestic violence offense and a charge of endangering the welfare of a child, stemming from an incident earlier in the day, Franklin police said.

The man, who was not identified by police, was seen at the front door and officers tried to make contact with him.

When officers could not establish communication with the man, Gloucester County’s SWAT unit was called to the scene around 2:15 p.m. for what was deemed a “criminal barricade,” police said.

Police shut down Catawba and Woodlawn avenues in the area and told nearby residents to shelter in place as a precaution.

The SWAT team took the man into custody around 7:30 p.m. after finding him hiding in a crawl space in the residence, police said.

He was turned over to Monroe police for processing. The man was not charged in connection with the barricade situation and no weapons were involved in the incident, police said.
