DALLAS — The Fort Worth Police Department has taken aim at Dallas police in a whimsical recruitment video inspired by Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us.”
“Not Like Us” is a 2024 diss track dropped by Lamar amid a bitter rap feud with Drake. The chart-topping single and party staple went on to sweep all five of its nominations at the 2025 Grammys, including song of the year
The Fort Worth police’s music video, posted Friday on social media, shows a cruiser coming to a screeching halt after driving past a Dallas police billboard with the words “We Are Hiring!”
The beat of “Not Like Us” plays as recruiter and officer Terrence Parker raps about the Dallas Police Department’s attempt to poach potential new hires from their city.
“Why you throwing up a board? Last time I checked we took 14 of yours,” Parker says at one point. “Every time we open up, we fill up when we hire,” he continues in the song.
In a Monday phone call with The Dallas Morning News, Parker said the department laughed after seeing the Dallas PD's sign.
“It’s like, seriously, Dallas?” he said. “You want to post stuff in our city.”
But, he later added, “It’s all in fun.”
The Dallas Police Department has seen increases in its recruits, with the class size jumping from 26 to 50 since last year, The Dallas Morning News reported. Still, the department has struggled with retention, losing in recent years nearly as many cops as it hired annually. In the 2021-2022 fiscal year, for example, 200 officers were hired, while about 236 left.
It’s a challenge former Dallas police chief Eddie García attributed in 2023 to a “national hiring crisis” for officers, The News reported. The police department’s hiring target for this year is 300.
When reached for comment Monday, a representative for Dallas police said they’re aware of the music video. “Stay tuned,” the representative added.
In the Instagram comment section of the Fort Worth police’s video, some users seemed hungry for a rap battle.
The nearby Arlington Police Department’s Instagram page replied under the post with a gif of Michael Jackson eating popcorn.
Another user called for a “dance off between both police departments.”
