An SUV driver hauling two children lost control of his vehicle on Interstate 91 and came close to landing on top of a state trooper, according to Vermont State Police.

Dash cam video of the crash was shared Feb. 23 on Facebook, and it shows that the Honda Pilot slid on snow-covered pavement near Dummerston and went into a roll.

Trooper Nathan Jensen was standing next to his patrol car as it happened, and he got lucky when the SUV tumbled past him in the median, officials said.

“With debris showering the cruiser, this crash over the weekend on I-91 ... is about as close as it gets to wiping out the trooper and the family he stopped to help,” the department wrote.

“The trooper was in the median, while the family he was assisting from a previous crash was in his cruiser, when an oncoming vehicle skidded and rolled out of control toward them. The trooper jumped over the guard rail and escaped injury.”

It happened around 11:30 a.m. on Feb. 19, as the trooper was responding to a crash on southbound Interstate 91, officials said.

Driver Kayne Ravenna, 28, was traveling northbound with his “two young children” when the crash occurred. The children were in car seats and escaped serious injury, but Ravenna was ejected and “suffered moderate injuries,” officials said.

The video of the crash has been viewed more than 179,000 times as of Feb. 24 and has prompted more than 3,000 reactions and comments, including some who called it “horrific.”

“That is utterly terrifying to watch,” Ellen Oberkotter wrote.

“Shows you your life can change in a matter of seconds,” Karen Littlefield said.

“Just seeing this has twisted my stomach,” Alexandra Antkievicz posted.
