Watch Suspects Toss Guns Before Historic Atlanta Police PIT Maneuver
Atlanta police dashboard camera footage captured five armed and dangerous suspects—including two wanted on outstanding warrants—tossing guns out of a car during a chase last month that ended with an historic PIT maneuver.
The pursuit happened shortly after 2:40 p.m. Feb. 28 after citywide BOLO was issued for multiple armed and dangerous suspects, a news release from the Atlanta Police Department stated. Earlier, officers had responded to a report of armed suspects during a vehicle break-in.
When members of the department's Aggressive Criminal Enforcement (ACE) Unit spotted the suspected vehicle, they tried to pull over the suspects, who fled, kicking off a chase.
As the pursuit continued, suspects inside the vehicle began throwing guns out of the vehicle. The weapons were later recovered, and investigators found that one of the firearms had been stolen.
Officers executed a PIT maneuver during the chase, but the first one was unsuccessful. A second PIT maneuver—the first executed by a female officer in the department's history—finally stopped the vehicle.
Five suspects were detained following the chase. Two suspects had outstanding warrants in DeKalb County and were taken into custody. The drive, who also was one of the suspects wanted on a warrant, was also arrested and charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
