A Virginia State Police trooper was talking with an allegedly impaired driver stopped in an interstate traffic when her cruiser slammed into her after a suspected drunken driver crashed into the vehicle.

A Virginia trooper escaped serious injury Tuesday after an alleged drunken driver struck her cruiser, which slammed into her while she was conducting a traffic stop with an accused impaired driver.

The incident happened just after 3 a.m. after a Virginia State Police trooper had stopped to check on a driver suspected of being under the influence of drugs who was parked in an interstate lane in Annandale, according to an agency social media post. The trooper exited her cruiser to talk with the driver, ordering her to move her car or get out of the vehicle, WDCW-TV reports.

That's when a Jeep Cherokee driven by an accused drunken driver crashed into a tractor-trailer stopped because of the blocked travel lane. The impact sent the Jeep into the police cruiser, which slammed into the trooper and the stopped vehicle.

Fortunately, the trooper sustained no broken bones in the crash and only suffered minor injuries. But the trooper "still has a long road to recovery," the agency post stated.

The driver of the stopped also suffered minor injuries in the incident. She was charged with driving under the influence of drugs, obstruction and other counts.
