Aug. 6, 2024
Milwaukee police officers' chase of a vehicle wanted in connection with two armed robbery carjackings ended with shots fired after the driver crashed into a cement truck and rammed a cruiser.

Suspects in a vehicle connected to two armed robbery carjackings rammed a Milwaukee police cruiser during a June pursuit before an officer opened fire, wounding a pregnant suspect.

The incident happened June 20 when police tried to stop a vehicle that was wanted in two armed robbery carjackings earlier in the day, WISN-TV reports. A chase erupted, and the vehicle eventually crashed into a cement truck after entering a construction lane.

Officers exited their cruisers and began approaching the vehicle. A police dashboard camera and an officer's body camera recorded the incident.

When officers got close to the vehicle, the driver put it in reverse and struck a police cruiser. The driver then drove forward and put the vehicle in reverse again with an officer behind it. That's when another officer began firing.

An 18-year-old pregnant suspect and a 17-year-old male suspect were struck by gunfire. They were rushed to the hospital, but the pregnant woman's unborn child did not survive.

Six suspects—including the pregnant woman and the 17-year-old—were in the vehicle at the time, and they were taken into custody. Four of them—two 18-year-olds and two 17-year-olds—were charged with 20 counts.

A 16-year-old male and 15-year-old female also were arrested, but it's unclear what charges they might face.

The officer who opened fire remains on administrative duty.
