WADSWORTH, OH — A fatal officer-involved shooting involving the Medina Sheriff’s Office is under investigation.

On Saturday night, authorities from Medina County Sheriff’s Office, Wadsworth Police Department and Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, responded to a “suicidal individual” around 9:11 p.m., a news release from the Medina County Sheriff’s Office said.

“Initial information led deputies to believe the individual may be armed and threatening suicide by cop,” the release states. Deputies also thought the person, who has not been publicly identified, could be heading to Wadsworth High School, which was celebrating its homecoming.

The school was placed on lockdown as a “precautionary measure,” Medina County authorities said.

When the suspect’s vehicle was spotted on Silvercreek Road, a short stretch of road that leads to Wadsworth High School, deputies initiated a traffic stop. The suspect then exited the vehicle with a possible firearm and officers fired at the suspect, who was pronounced dead at the scene despite life-saving efforts, Medina County authorities said.

The incident is being investigated by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
