June 27, 2013
A Key West motorcycle officer is recovering after he was struck by lightning while on patrol Wednesday morning.
Officer Deglys Chavarria was on his department-issued motorcycle at a stop light on North Rossevelt Boulevard around 10:30 a.m. when he was struck, according to The Key West Citizen.
Police spokeswoman Alyson Crean told the newspaper that the 27-year-old officer was transported to Lower Keys Medical Center and was alert and conscious.
The nine-year veteran of the department was reportedly complaining of left arm pain as he waited for paramedics to arrive.
Officials said it is unclear if the lightning bolt struck near Chavarria or hit him directly.
