A Philadelphia police sergeant on a motorcycle suffered an injured left ankle and left side when a man illegally operating a dirt bike collided with him.

A bystander is being praised for stopping an illegal dirt biker following a crash that injured a Philadelphia police officer Wednesday.

The incident happened shortly after 9:30 p.m. when a man illegally riding a dirt bike at at high rate of speed ran through a stop sign and collided with a Philadelphia police sergeant on a motorcycle, WCAU-TV reports. When the dirt bike operator tried to flee the scene, a witness to the crash stopped him.

"He got the bike started, and the cop said, 'Don't let him go,'" Anthony Wade told WPVI-TV. "And he tried to take off, and I ripped him off the bike and pulled him down to the ground."

Once the man was on the ground, the sergeant pulled his gun and detained the suspect.

The sergeant injured his left ankle and left side in the crash, and he was rushed to the hospital. The suspect was uninjured but taken to the hospital as a precaution.
