Tenn. Deputy Critically Injured Responding to Colleague's Collision

A Shelby County sheriff's deputy is on life support following a collision with a motorist while he was responding to a crash involving another deputy in Lakeland.

Two Tennessee deputies were injured in separate crashes a couple miles apart Tuesday, with one deputy on life support.

The first incident happened shortly before 7 a.m. in Lakeland when a driver pulled out in front of a Shelby County sheriff's deputy on a motorcycle, WMC-TV reports. A second deputy was responding to that crash when another vehicle pulled out and collided with him.

The second deputy was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and is on life support. Chief Deputy Anthony Bucker described the possibility of the deputy's recovery as "touch and go."

The first deputy suffered minor injuries and was released Tuesday.

“The best medicine that these two deputies could have is the prayers from our community our community,” said Chief Deputy Bucker.

The collisions are under investigation by the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
