Two San Francisco police officers were assaulted Tuesday afternoon while seated in their patrol vehicle near O'Farrell and Polk streets, police said.
The incident occurred at approximately 3:56 p.m. when a male suspect approached the marked vehicle, opened the driver's side door, and began physically attacking both officers without provocation, according to the San Francisco Police Department.
As the officers attempted to detain the suspect, additional police units arrived to assist. The suspect was eventually subdued and taken into custody. Charges are pending, and the details of the arrest remain under investigation.
Paramedics were called to the scene and transported the officers to a local hospital for treatment. The SFPD confirmed that the injuries sustained by the officers were not life-threatening, and they are expected to recover.
In a statement, SFPD Chief Bill Scott condemned the alleged assault as "unacceptable."
"An unprovoked attack like this on our officers is unacceptable, and the SFPD will do everything within our power to hold this perpetrator accountable," Scott said. "These officers — who show valor every day — are thankfully recovering at the hospital."
He expressed gratitude for the officers' bravery in the face of violence and commended all responders involved in the swift capture of the suspect.
The investigation is ongoing, and police are urging anyone with information to contact the department. Tips can be submitted via text to TIP411, beginning the message with "SFPD," or by calling the SFPD tip line at 415-575-4444.
