Conn. Trooper Wounds Man Driving Toward Him
NEW HAVEN -- A state trooper shot and wounded a suspected robber Saturday night after the man drove a van directly at the trooper, state police said.
Giuseppi Angileri, 36, of East Haven, was hit in the mid-section and was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital for surgery, state police spokesman Lt. J. Paul Vance said.
Police in the area were told to be on the lookout for Angileri, who was reported to be driving a stolen van and was wanted for several thefts and street robberies in the area over the past two days. A six-year veteran trooper spotted the vehicle stopped at a traffic light at Ferry and Lombard streets at about 6:45 p.m. and pulled up behind Angileri, Vance said.
"The trooper had the van boxed in and then attempted to remove the operator," according to a state police press release. "As the trooper approached the stolen van, the operator back up, pulled forward and backed up again, and in doing so, struck three vehicles. The suspect then drove directly at the trooper, causing the trooper to draw his service weapon and fire at the suspect."
Angileri managed to drive about two blocks with state and city police in pursuit before he stopped and was taken into custody at Main and Lombard streets, police said. The unidentified trooper was treated for a minor injury, police said.
The state police Western District Major Crime Squad is investigating.
