Man Takes New Jersey Police Car for Joyride

A man is accused of stealing a parked Newark Division of Police vehicle, and he was apprehended in Nutley, a town nearly 10 miles away.

A man stole a marked Newark police car Thursday before he was stopped in Nutley and taken for a psychiatric evaluation, authorities said.

The man managed to take the police vehicle, which was parked near McCarter Highway and 3rd Avenue in Newark, around noon and fled, according to city Public Safety Director Brian O’Hara.

Officers pulled over the man on Route 21 north, near Exit 8 in Nutley, according to authorities.

“This incident remains under investigation,” O’Hara said in a statement. “No further information is available.”
