Accused Drunk Driver Rear Ends Mass. State Police SUV at Car Fire

April 25, 2022
An alleged intoxicated driver faces DUI, marijuana and other charges after the motorist crashed into a Massachusetts State Police cruiser at the scene of a car fire along Interstate 95.

State police say an intoxicated driver crashed into a cruiser along I-95 early Sunday morning, sending that driver and three passengers to the hospital.

According to police, they had responded to a car fire after midnight in the area of exit 23 when another vehicle crashed into the rear of a state police cruiser.

Pictures police posted to social media show the police SUV’s rear bumper completely torn away and the rear axle exposed.

Police say no troopers were injured but that the operator and three passengers sustained non-life threatening injuries. All four were transported to Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton.

Police say the operator of the vehicle that caused the crash was charged with operating under the influence of alcohol, having an open marijuana container, failing to move over, operating to endanger and speeding.

All 50 states have some form of Move Over Law, which requires drivers approaching an accident scene or any stopped official vehicle with emergency lights flashing to change lanes or slow down. Massachusetts passed one in 2009. The law was implemented to prevent exactly this kind of accident, proponents said at the time.
