A man with a broken back fought past his injuries and to save an Alabama State trooper who was trapped when a tree fell on his cruiser.

The amazing rescue happened shortly after 1:45 p.m. Jan. 12 as Greg Jones was driving in Alexander City as high winds and a tornado tore through the area, WVTM-TV reports. As Jones passed a Trooper Jake Smith going the opposite direction, he saw a massive tree come crashing down and landing on the trooper's vehicle before several more slammed down on Jones' pickup truck.

The falling trees totaled the truck and seriously injured Jones, breaking his back. Despite the pain, Jones made his way to Smith's cruiser to help the trooper out of his demolished cruiser.

“I tried to pull the cruiser’s door open, but it was stuck,” said Jones. “I prayed and took a deep breath, placing my feet on the police cruiser. I pulled as hard as I could, but I was in so much pain. Finally, I pulled the trooper out of his car.”

Two people drove by the accident scene, and Jones was taken to the hospital, where he is still recovering from his injuries. Smith only suffered minor injuries.

“I am a person of faith,” said Jones. “We both could have been killed, but the Lord was looking out for both of us. I have thanked the Lord many times since yesterday.”
