Ford Opens the Door for Police and Law Enforcement to Order the All-New 2019 Ford Police Responder Hybrid Sedan
- Police departments across the United States can place orders today for the 2019 Ford Police Responder Hybrid Sedan – the industry’s first pursuit-rated hybrid vehicle that will potentially save customers thousands in fuel costs
- All-new Police Responder Hybrid Sedan joins Ford Police Interceptor Sedan and Ford Police Interceptor Utility which represent the most police vehicles in the United States, with 63 percent market share
- Ford is investing $4.5 billion in its electrification efforts by 2020 to offer customers greater fuel efficiency, capability and power across its global vehicle lineup; all-new Police Responder Hybrid Sedan is among 13 Ford vehicles that will be electrified in the next five years, including F-150 and Mustang, which was announced in January.
Ford today opens order banks for its all-new Police Responder Hybrid Sedan – the industry’s first pursuit-rated hybrid police car and the second of 13 new electrified vehicles the company plans to introduce in the next five years.
The 2019 Police Responder Hybrid Sedan is part of a $4.5 billion Ford investment to make electric vehicles intended to give customers greater capability, productivity and performance – plus better fuel economy.
The all-new law enforcement car will help cities decrease CO2 emissions, and offers the potential for significant fuel savings – both while driving and while stopped. While driving, Ford’s patented hybrid technology is projected to provide EPA-estimated combined gas mileage of 38 miles per gallon – more than twice that of today’s Police Interceptor Sedan with 3.7-liter V6 with EPA-estimated 18 mpg combined. Actual mileage will vary. Final EPA-estimated ratings are not yet available.
While stopped, Ford Police Responder Hybrid Sedan can power the large electrical loads required by law enforcement agencies – lights, radios, computers and other police equipment – via the lithium-ion hybrid battery, with the gasoline engine running only intermittently to top off the battery. This will bring potentially significant savings of fuel, fuel spend, and CO2. In conventional gasoline-engine police vehicles, the engine must be running constantly at idle to keep the battery charged.
Ford has partnered with cities on custom law enforcement vehicles since the days of the Model T, and now sells the most police vehicles to law enforcement professionals nationwide, holding a dominant 63 percent market share. All Ford police vehicles are built to the highest standards of safety, durability and performance, along with being purpose-built and upfit-friendly.
The all-new vehicle will be the first hybrid police vehicle with full pursuit capabilities. It will go through independent third-party testing this fall by Michigan State Police and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, and the results will be published by those agencies. Tests include acceleration, braking, ergonomics, and extensive multi-lap vehicle dynamics evaluations designed to simulate actual pursuit and emergency driving situations.
Nationwide delivery of the Ford Police Responder Hybrid Sedan is planned for summer 2018.
