A handcuffed breaking-and-entering suspect overpowered Toronto police officers and stole a K-9 SUV with two dogs in the back, leading police on a wild chase.

A handcuffed suspect stole a Canadian police car with two K-9s still and led officers on a wild chase early Monday.

The incident happened just before 4:30 a.m. as Toronto police were responding to a breaking-and-entering call, CP24 reports. After police detained and handcuffed a suspect, the man overpowered officers and drove off in a K-9 SUV with two dogs in the back.

Police pursued the stolen SUV, which crashed in a grocery store parking lot. The suspect was apprehended after trying to carjack a taxi.

“It was an audacious move to take a police car and engage in this kind of activity, it’s just extraordinary," said Inspector Craig Young.

The dogs weren't harmed in the incident. The suspect and the cab driver were both taken to the hospital.

Police are still investigating the matter and trying to determine what actually happened.

“The circumstances will dictate whether an internal investigation is justified," said Craig.
