A driver was killed and four other people were taken to hospitals, including a Sacramento County sheriff’s deputy, after a car broadsided a patrol vehicle Thursday morning in Antelope, California Highway Patrol officials said.

A Mazda traveling westbound on Elverta Road collided shortly after 2 a.m. with the right side of a Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office vehicle driven by an on-duty deputy, heading northbound on Watt Avenue, CHP North Sacramento spokesman Officer Justin Fetterly said.

The Mazda driver, a 19-year-old Antelope man, was ejected from the vehicle in the collision, according to Fetterly.

The 19-year-old died at a hospital, Fetterly said, and three adult passengers in the Mazda were taken to hospitals with injuries ranging from major to minor.

The CHP in a news release described the passengers as a 20-year-old man from Sacramento and a 20-year-old man from Antelope, both with major injuries, and a 21-year-old Antelope woman with minor injuries. None of the four Mazda occupants were wearing seat belts, according to the release.

The deputy, a 27-year-old Sacramento County man, was taken to a hospital for a complaint of pain, Fetterly said. His injury was minor, according to the news release.

The crash remains under investigation, but drugs and alcohol are not suspected as factors, according to the CHP release.

The deceased driver’s identity will be released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office pending notification of family.
