Ind. Police Officer Seriously Injured in Collision with Car that Ran Light

A vehicle carrying two people ran a red light at an intersection and crashed into a Hammond police cruiser, sending the officer inside to the hospital in serious condition.

HAMMOND, IN — A Hammond police officer was transported to a local hospital in serious condition Friday night after his squad car was struck by a passenger vehicle.

At approximately 7:45 p.m., the officer was traveling west on 169th Street when a vehicle traveling south on Southeastern Avenue collided with the squad car, officials said.

The Hammond Police Department said the vehicle, occupied by two female passengers, ran a red light. Their conditions are currently unknown.

The police officer's injuries are not considered life-threatening.

"We are actively investigating this incident and will release further updates as more information becomes available," Hammond police said.
