The system works with existing military and government ID cards, such as drivers' licenses and passports, and therefore requires no need to issue or create a special ID card, a major cost savings. DEFENSE ID is a ruggedized handheld device that withstands being dropped, severe cold or hot temperatures and has a battery span of over 8 hours without being in its cradle.
