Texas Sheriff's Deputy Killed, Police Chief Critical After Being Struck While Assisting Motorist

RIESEL, Texas -- A Falls County Sheriff's deputy was killed and the Riesel Police chief was critically injured in a crash on a highway Friday afternoon.
Falls County Sheriff’s Deputy Matt Jones and Riesel Police Chief Danny Krumnow were assisting a motorist on Highway 6 when a vehicle hydroplaned and struck both of them, according to KWKT-TV.
Jones was pronounced dead on the scene. The driver of the Mazda was also sent to the hospital with minor injuries.
Krumnow was flown by a medical helicopter to Baylor Scott and White in Waco and has since transferred to Scott and White in Temple where he underwent surgery to remove his spleen and do exploratory surgery. He is out of surgery and is listed in stable condition.
His family is with him and they have thanked everyone who has expressed their thoughts and concerns, but have request privacy at this time and no visitors at the hospital except family for now.
Jones’ K-9 partner, Thor, was not injured in the crash and is now in the care of the Jones family.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
