Bayonne Police Capt. Paul Jamolawicz, who had served with the department since 1985, died on duty "while serving our community," according to the city's mayor.

A New Jersey police officer died suddenly while on duty Friday.

Bayonne Police Capt. Paul Jamolawicz died "while on-duty serving our community," Chief Robert Geisler said in a statement, according to the Hudson Reporter. No details were given about the cause of death.

“Paul’s love of family and this city was evident every day of his life and his friendship will be sorely missed,” said Mayor James Davis, who joined the department a year after Jamolawicz and the two remained friends.

Jamolawicz began working with the department in 1985, and he was promoted to captain in 2018. He worked in a variety of roles, and he received three commendations and seven Excellent Police Service Awards during his career.

Davis called Jamolawicz an outstanding police officer and a devoted family man. A graduate of New Jersey City University, Jamolawicz also was a longtime businessman, owning and operating a laundromat.

Jamolawicz is survived by his wife and two children. He is the first Bayonne police officer to dine in the line of duty in 52 years.
