When police officers arrived to investigate a shots fired call Sunday night on Lipscomb Road, they didn't initially find much.
But then the phone rang.
Wilson Medical Center was on the line and personnel there said they had a shooting victim in the emergency room fighting with hospital staff.
When officers arrived, they found Raymond E. Baines Jr., 29, of 1009 Herring Ave., suffering from a gunshot wound to his leg, said Wilson Police Sgt. Steve Stroud.
Baines was also trying to destroy suspected powder cocaine while at the hospital, Stroud said.
He had it in his hand, but hospital staff spotted it, police said. It ended up getting spilled everywhere.
Officers were able to obtain the cocaine from Baines, who was transported to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville for treatment for his injuries, Stroud said. Officers were able to locate the crime scene in a parking lot located in the 1600 block of Lipscomb Road.
Two people have been charged in the case, one for shooting Baines and Baines himself.
Corey D. Williams, 35, of 1103 Sauls St. was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.
After police took out a warrant, Williams surrendered himself to detectives, Stroud said.
Williams received a $10,000 bond. He has a prior 2000 conviction for misdemeanor hit and run.
Baines was released from Vidant Medical Center Monday and police arrested him for possession of cocaine, resisting officers and possession of marijuana. Baines was also served with outstanding warrants for assault with a dangerous weapon in relation to a previous assault on Williams and failure to appear for a previous charge. Baines received a $6,000 secured bond.
Baines has an extensive history of criminal convictions in Wilson County. Past convictions include common law robbery, possession of schedule I drugs, wanton injury to person/property, resisting an officer, possession of schedule VI drugs and others.
