Wis. Police: Stranger Broke into Woman's Home, Cooked Shrimp and Pasta

Sept. 27, 2024
When Madison police responded to a call about a woman breaking into a house, officers found the suspect casually walking inside the residence and cooking a shrimp and pasta dinner.

A Madison woman came home Tuesday night and found a stranger cooking shrimp and pasta in her kitchen.

The woman, who lives in the 400 block of South Livingston Street, came home about 10:30 p.m. and was startled to see all the lights on. She saw someone walking around the house and called police.

Officers looked through the windows to see a woman casually walking around the inside of the home. The woman came to the door and calmly told officers that she had permission to be in the house from the resident, whom she mentioned by name, a police statement said.

The woman said she met the resident at a coffee shop and had been given keys to the house.

But police said the woman had been in the house long enough to cook herself a shrimp and pasta dinner, and apparently inspect mail and other items to learn the name of the resident and make up a story. The resident insisted she had never met the woman and didn't give her permission to eat her food.

Officer Anthony Vogel told the Wisconsin State Journal the woman likely got in through an unsecured door or window.

The woman was arrested on a tentative charge of residential burglary and booked into the Dane County Jail, Vogel said.

It was unclear if there was any leftover shrimp and pasta.
