Weekend (May 9-11)
An officer with the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks was killed in the line of duty Friday night.
Officials say that Master Sgt. John Collum was investigating a prowler on John Rankin Highway around 10 p.m. when he was struck by a 2002 Nisan Sentry.
The Metro Nashville Police Department was also in mourning after an officer was fatally struck by a motor home while assisting at the scene of a wreck Saturday morning.
Officer Michael Petrina was directing traffic at the scene of a previous crash when the motor home rounded a blind curve on the highway and slammed into the 25-year-old rookie.
Two Killeen, Texas police officers were wounded in an early morning shooting Friday.
Officials said the Tactical Response Team and Bell County Organized Crime Unit went to serve a warrant when a male and female inside an apartment opened fire. Two other officer were hit, but were protected by their equipment.
Members of the NYPD Aviation Unit used a helicopter to rescue a hiker with a broken ankle from a cliff near the Hudson River in New Jersey Sunday.
The crew flew alongside the steep cliff and hovered about 50 feet above the injured woman while an officer was lowered to her and she was placed in a rescue basket and taken to Nyack Hospital.
Monday (May 12)
The Killeen, Texas Police Department mourned the loss of a detective who died Sunday, two days after he was shot in the face while serving a warrant.
Detective Charles Dinwiddie and other SWAT team members attempted to breach a window while serving a narcotics search warrant when the suspect opened fire.
A Brentwood, N.H. police officer was fatally shot while responding to the report of a domestic disturbance.
Officials say a man opened fire on Officer Steve Arkell before the home erupted in flames.
An off-duty Mesa, Ariz. police officer on his way home from a shift was killed by a wrong-way driver.
Officer Brandon Mendoza was struck head on by a driver who drove more than 30 miles in the wrong direction despite attempts by police to stop him.
President Barack Obama honored the nation's top police officers during a ceremony in the East Room of the White House.

While Biden was in attendance at the Peace Officers' Memorial Service, President Barack Obama spoke at the dedication of the new Sept. 11 museum in New York.
The museum welcomed victims, survivors and responders and opens to the public on May 21.
A Fort Lauderdale , Fla. police officer was lauded for helping a barefoot homeless man who reported his shoes had been stolen as he slept.

Friday (May 16)
A Missouri City, Texas police officer went over the edge of a bridge after a vehicle rear-ended his cruiser.
Officer Kenneth Lewis and his partner were conducting a traffic when another vehicle slammed into the back of their patrol car, causing the officer to fall close to 30 feet down off of the bridge.
,p> Police unions across the country are pushing for officers to be able to collect workers' compensation benefits if they suffer post-traumatic stress disorder.
Some police chiefs and municipal leaders oppose the efforts, saying they are concerned the benefits would strain budgets and lead to frivolous claims.
