Ala. Police Officer Jumps Barrier to Avoid Driver who Struck Cruisers

Dec. 6, 2024
A Moody police officer at a crash scene suffered only minor injuries after vaulting over a concrete barrier to avoid being struck by a driver who crashed into two cruisers.

Two Moody police officers escaped serious injury early Friday when a patrol cruiser working a wreck was struck on Interstate 20.

Officers were dispatched at 5:35 a.m. to I-20 westbound near mile marker 147 on a report of a semi-truck that hit the median and was partially blocking traffic.

Once on the scene, police determined the truck had a tire blowout and hit the wall. They contacted St. Clair County sheriff’s deputies and Alabama State Troopers and requested a wrecker to move the disabled truck.

Within four minutes of arriving, one officer returned to his or her patrol vehicle and the second officer was walking back to his or her cruiser, police officials said in a news release.

A short time later, an oncoming Hyundai struck the rear of one of the police cruisers. The impact slammed the patrol vehicle into another patrol vehicle.

The officer who was on foot jumped the concrete barrier to avoid being hit.

The officer already inside the cruiser sustained minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to UAB Hospital. That officer was treated and released.

The crash remains under investigation by troopers.
