A Boynton Beach police officer shot and wounded a person who fled from a traffic stop early Thursday and brandished a weapon, officials said.

The incident happened about 2:30 a.m. along the 400 block of Northwest First Avenue.

According to Boynton Beach police spokeswoman Stephanie Slater, officers were in the process of conducting a traffic stop on a silver Honda Accord carrying five males in their late teens and early 20s. During the stop, one of the people got out of the car and tried to get away.

While fleeing, he "brandished a handgun toward an officer," Slater said by email.

The officer, who wasn't hurt, opened fire. Whether the young man fired his weapon was not immediately known, Slater said. Three shell casings and the male's gun were recovered at the scene, she said.

The person who was shot was trauma alerted to Delray Medical Center. His condition wasn't immediately known.

The officer who opened fire has not been identified. Per standard procedure he will be on paid administrative leave while the incident is investigated, Slater said.

This developing story will be updated as soon as additional information is available.
