Something for everyone in NOLA

June 15, 2012

New Orleans, the same city that experienced one of the most dramatic emergency response and law enforcement emergencies in the history of the country following Hurricane Katrina in 2005, is this year’s destination for the 2012 Enforcement Expo and Conference. Law enforcement professionals from across the nation are encouraged to come to the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center Oct. 31-Nov. 2 fore free training and an up-close looks at hundreds of products and services. The annual Enforcement Expo/EMS colocated events, produced by Cygnus Business Media, publisher of Law Enforcement Technology, Law Enforcement Product News, Officer.com and EMS World, have drawn high attendance and national interest in recent years, at Las Vegas in 2011 and Dallas in 2010.

Public safety professionals face increasing challenges as budgets continue to shrink and workloads expand. Time is precious commodity, which is why this year’s conference is structured around shorter, easy-to-digest, seminars. The free seminars at the Enforcement Expo will be just over one hour in length. Topics cover topics like auto theft, sexual assault/abuse investigations, high-risk traffic stops, ethics, active shooter, officer-involved shootings, counter-terrorism, meth labs, and fraudulent documents.

One-hour, shortened sessions on October 31-November 1include “Sexual Assault/Abuse Investigations” presented by Prince George County (Maryland) Hospital Assault Center Community Educator Cheryl Banks. Meanwhile, Tom Perroni, training director at the Commonwealth Criminal Justice Academy in Fredericksburg, Virginia will conduct a session addressing “High-Risk Traffic Stops” (still a big contributor of on-duty deaths). Officer.com’s Editor-in-Chief Frank Borelli will present “Active Shooter” training, while New Orleans Attorney Donovan Livaccari will tackle “Legal Aspects of Officer-Involved Shootings.”

Two additional abbreviated training sessions include one on counter-terrorism, presented by Joseph Lear, supervisory special agent of FBI—New Orleans; and a session on “Meth Labs”, taught by instructors from the Regional Counterdrug Training Academy in Meridian, Mississippi. On November 2 attendees can sit in on a free four-hour fraudulent documents training, taught by instructors from the Louisiana State University. In addition, an all-day (eight-hour) EMS World Expo seminar, “Trauma First Response,” will be open to Enforcement show-goers. For a fee, non-EMS professionals can brush up on pre-hospital trauma life support to the day before the show opens on Oct. 30.

In between training sessions, everyone is encouraged to walk the rows and rows of exhibits to see, touch and learn about hundreds of cutting-edge products and software systems that can help you to do your job most efficiently.
