Two Tennessee police officers were injured during a harrowing traffic stop over the weekend that was caught on video.
The incident happened Sunday after Franklin police pulled over a Roy Nicholson along Interstate 65 for a traffic infraction, the department stated in a news release. During the spot, officers spotted a gun and could smell marijuana.
When Nicholson was asked to get out of his vehicle, he resisted, and in footage captured by a dashboard camera, Officer Dustyn Stevens tries to cuff the suspect and take him to his cruiser. Nicholson then attempts to free himself from the officer's grasp and head to his parked car.
Another officer, Matt Lamarr, arrived at the scene to help with the arrest, with both officers grabbing on to Nicholson to try to stop his escape. The suspect eventually was able to pull away in his car, dragging the officers along the interstate and running over Stevens.
Nicholson, 26, was eventually apprehended by police thanks to the help of eyewitnesses, who followed him and provided updated location information. He was charged with two counts of aggravated assault against a first responder and felony evading, with additional charges expected to be filed.
Stevens, a four-year veteran with the department, was taken to the hospital, where he was treated and released. Lamar, who has been with the department for 16 years, did not require immediate medical treatment.
