EAST LYME, CT — A Rhode Island man engaged Connecticut troopers in a pursuit and struck a cruiser before his truck was pinned against a barrier on Interstate 95, according to police.
Connecticut State Police said Nicholas A. Thompson, 36 of Glendale is charged with reckless driving, disobeying signal of an officer, passing on the right, failure to maintain proper lane — limited access highway, first-degree criminal mischief, interfering with an officer/resisting, criminal attempt at assault on public safety personnel and first-degree reckless endangerment.
At around 8:30 a.m. on Monday, dispatch began to receive calls reporting a white pickup truck driving "in the breakdown lane on Interstate 395 southbound in the area of Exit 22" in the Montville area, police said. The truck also was involved in a crash but fled, police added.
Troopers activated their lights and tried to pull over the truck, police said, but Thompson did not pull over and due his erratic driving, troopers terminated "their attempt at a traffic stop."
Troopers ended up boxing in the truck and stopped it by the I-95 south on-ramp, police said. Thompson then began to drive forward, strike a trooper's cruiser and continued to drive, police said.
Police said a pursuit began again and East Lyme police helped deploy stop sticks on I-95 south near Exit 71. Police said the ticks disabled the tires but Thompson still made an effort to get away.
A trooper attempted to block the truck against a Jersey barrier when Thompson continued and struck the cruiser, police said.
Police said Thompson was finally stopped once a trooper made contact with their bumper, made the truck lose control and successfully pinned it against the right shoulder.
A taser was deployed on Thompson, police said, when he resisted arrest. Thompson was evaluated at the hospital before being brought back to Troop E, police said.
Police said everyone involved was uninjured.
Thompson was scheduled appear at state Superior Court in New London on Tuesday after he was held in lieu of $250,000 bail, police said.
