WOOSTER, OH — Police trying to stop a vehicle with a stolen license plate ended up shooting and wounding the driver after he reported opened fire on officers during a chase.
The suspect, whose identity was not released, was flown by helicopter to Akron General Hospital with life-threatening wounds after the chase ended in Wooster, police say. No officers were injured.
The chase started at about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in Wooster when a Flock camera detected a license plate that had been reported stolen was on a Honda Pilot, police say. Officers began chasing the vehicle but it was called off after a short pursuit.
The vehicle was spotted a short time later on the east side of Wooster. Police stopped the Honda, but the driver got out and fired several rounds at the officer, police say. The officer returned fire and the suspect got back into the Honda and drover off.
A deputy with the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department and a State Highway Patrol trooper spotted the Honda and began chasing it, police say. The suspect reportedly fired several more rounds at officers from his vehicle during the pursuit. Officers did not return fire, police say.
A state trooper and an officer with the Dalton Police Department collided with the Honda, forcing it to stop. The suspect was taken into custody and then taken to Wooster Community Hospital before being flown to Akron.
No additional details were released Wednesday.
