While being transported to a hospital, an inmate in handcuffs kicked out the window of a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department patrol and then threw himself onto the freeway in Santa Clarita.

A handcuffed inmate tried—and failed—to escape a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department cruiser during a prisoner transport over the weekend.

The incident happened shortly before 5 p.m. in Santa Clarita as deputies were taking an inmate from the North County Correctional Facility to a hospital for an injury, KTLA-TV reports. During the transport, the inmate kicked out the cruiser's window and then jumped out while still in cuffs.

After stopping, deputies struggled with the inmate, and a bystander also stopped and helped with the capture. The incident was caught on video by a witness.

Deputies were finally able to restrain the inmate and continue to the hospital. It was unclear if the inmate received additional injuries in his escape attempt.
